A Litte Insight Into Who I am

I’ve noticed recently from the stats that WordPress puts out (which basically shows the number of hits to my blog,) that I’ve had an increase in daily hits – especially the last couple of days.  I don’t know if that is due to the From Mess to Masterpiece? posts or due to adding Google+ to my social networking distribution media. (By the way, if you aren’t on Google+ and would like to be, it is currently by invite only. Post in the comments that you’d like to receive an invite and make certain you have your email address in the login part of the comment section and I will send you an invite. I still have a number left.)

Regardless of the reason, I figured perhaps I should shed a little insight into who Debbi Robertson is (for those who have just recently been introduced and for those who haven’t taken time to dig around in the sight to figure it out for themselves.)

  • First and foremost, I’m a Believer in Jesus Christ, love the Lord and His Word and desire to serve God in all I do.
  • Next I am a wife and mother – both titles I wear proudly.
  • Then I’m a daughter, sister, aunt, friend. (Yes mom, I realize I was a daughter before being a wife and mother. I get it.)
  • I am also a blogger (nah…really? Yes, really!) and an amateur photographer.
  • I enjoy being an encourager and influencer to others who need an ear, advice or direction.
  • Teaching is a part of who I am and have taught many people in many different areas over the years.
  • I published a book two years ago. It’s a weekly devotional of motivational weight loss tips.
  • I am committed to my church, Covenant Love Christian Center, and my pastors, Nick and Germaine Wright.
  • My son (whom I often refer to as Son) is grown and attending the University of Texas in Austin full-time. He is studying to achieve a doctorate in Sociology, so has a number of years of schooling still ahead of him.
  • My husband (whom I often refer to as Sweet Hubby) is the most wonderful husband a woman could ask for. Most definitely a gift from God at the perfect time in my life.
  • I have been the age of 24 for a number of years now. It runs in my family as my dad is only 36. I’m actually almost three years younger than Son.
  • I have an adorable little 4 pound munchkin of a Yorkie named Lucy. She is my shadow and also a gift from God at the perfect time in my life.
  • I had a few photos published. Earlier in the year, the city of Mineral Wells selected a number of my photos to be used in their Chamber of Commerce brochure. The big honor came in discovering that my dad also had some photos used in the same brochure! Then just a couple of months ago, the decorating company for a new, local McDonald’s restaurant contacted me to request a photo to use on a giant acrylic display in their store. My claim to fame! Ha

Now, let’s get back to the amateur photographer part. If you will notice, the majority of my posts lately have been in regard to photography. Let me explain a little as to why.

Almost two years ago, my parents purchased a gift for me: my first DSLR! (For more on that, click here.) Since that time, I haven’t put it down. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a camera in my hand. I was often the heart of jokes by others because you could always count on me having a camera in my purse. I came by it naturally. (If you clicked that last link, you know why.) But those photos had always been quick snap shots. And that is pretty much it.

After receiving my first DSLR, I began to see photography as art. And myself as an artist. Or at least a wanna-be artist. I delved in and began reading everything I could – online, books, etc. I also began shooting everything around me. I have spent the last two years learning, learning, learning and shooting, shooting, shooting. I enjoy the post processing of the photos almost as much as shooting. So let’s add: processing, processing, processing to the above.  I truly enjoy taking a shot and watching it transform. Each photo becomes my impression of art from photography.

Up until just recently I’ve called myself a Hobby Photographer. That was before I found this definition of amateur:

An amateur (French amateur “lover of”, from Old French and ultimately from Latin amatorem nom. amator, “lover”) is generally considered a person attached to a particular pursuit, study, or science, without pay and often without formal training.

Although photography is for me a hobby, and one I enjoy very much, I like being referred to as an amateur due to the definition above. I am for certain attached to photography, I have not received pay (except the $25 stock fee I received for the McDonald’s photo,) I for sure have no formal training, and above all I am without doubt a lover of photography.

My mission in my art is to “let my light shine in the darkroom of life.” With my obedience to the Lord’s direction and with His help, that is exactly what I plan to do!

Remember to have fun, stay young and…
Let Your Light Shine,
Debbi

  1. After reading the definition of ‘amateur’ I am proud to call myself an amateur photographer! I have the love, passion, desire, but no formal training and truly no desire to be ‘professional’ (making my living) from it! I don’t care about ‘making’ a living from photography, but I am ‘living’ my life through my photography! Great blog by the way! ♡
